AN AVERAGE OF SEVEN ZAMBIANS MOSTLY WOMEN HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN INDIA IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING

AN AVERAGE OF SEVEN ZAMBIANS MOSTLY WOMEN HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN INDIA IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING.
ACCORDING TO A STATEMENT RELEASED TO RADIO PHOENIX  BY  FIRST SECRETARY FOR PRESS AT THE  ZAMBIAN  HIGH COMMISSION  IN INDIA BWALYA NONDO ,  INDIA HAS  SINCE CALLED FOR INCREASED COLLABORATION WITH ZAMBIA IN EFFORTS AIMED AT CHECKING ILLICIT TRAFFICKING OF NARCOTIC DRUGS AND PSYCHOTROPIC SUBSTANCES.
MR  NONDO SAYS THE ZAMBIAN PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE ON NATIONAL SECURITY AND FOREIGN AFFAIRS CURRENTLY ON A STUDY TOUR OF INDIA LEARNT FROM THE NARCOTICS CONTROL BUREAU OF INDIA THAT THE ZAMBIANS WERE ARRESTED FOR TRAFFICKING IN HEROIN AND COCAINE AMONG OTHER DRUGS.
HE SAYS DURING AN INTERACTIVE SESSION WITH THE ZAMBIAN PARLIAMENTARIANS, NARCOTICS DRUG CONTROL OF INDIA DIRECTOR GENERAL O.P.S MALIK CALLED FOR COOPERATION BETWEEN INDIA AND ZAMBIA IN SHARING LEGISLATIVE AND ENFORCEMENT PRACTICES THAT WILL ADD IMPETUS TO COMBATING DRUG-TRAFFICKING.
AND COMMITTEE ON NATIONAL SECURITY & FOREIGN AFFAIRS CHAIRPERSON DR. PETER MACHUNGWA WHO IS DELEGATION LEADER, SAYS  THE USE OF WOMEN IN DRUG TRAFFICKING IS WORRYING AND ECHOED SENTIMENTS FOR A COORDINATED APPROACH IN TACKLING THE VICE.
DR. MACHUNGWA WHO IS LUAPULA MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT STRESSED THE NEED FOR THE AGREEMENT SIGNED IN 1993 BETWEEN ZAMBIA AND INDIA TO FIGHT DRUG TRAFFICKING AND MONEY LAUNDERING  TO REALIZE ITS INTENDED OBJECTIVES.
THE COMMITTEE IS IN INDIA TO GATHER FIRST HAND INFORMATION ON ECONOMIC DIPLOMACY WITH ASIAN COUNTRIES AND HOW ZAMBIA CAN STIMULATE FURTHER DIRECT FOREIGN INVESTMENT.
ANOTHER OBJECTIVE OF THE VISIT IS TO ASSESS THE EXTENT TO WHICH ZAMBIAN WOMEN WERE INVOLVED IN DRUG TRAFFICKING.
MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT IN THE COMMITTEE ARE ELIZABETH CHITIKA,
(KAWAMBWA CENTRAL) CHARLES KAKOMA, (ZAMBEZI WEST) ACKSON SEJANI,
(MAPATIZYA) AND RAISI FORRIE TEMBO (NYIMBA).
OTHERS ARE ELIOT KAMONDO, (MUFUMBWE), MWANSA KAPEYA (MPIKA) CENTRAL AND OBIUS CHISALA (CHILUBI).
