THE ZAMBIA NATIONAL AIDS NETWORK (ZNAN) HAS WARNED LEAD AGENCY INSTITUTIONS AFFILIATED TO IT OF STERN ACTION IF THEY MISUSE THE MONEY GIVEN TO THEM FOR THE PURPOSE OF HELPING THE POOR.
ZNAN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ELIZABETH MATAKA SOUNDED THE WARNING TODAY WHEN SHE HANDED OVER 13 VEHICLES AND NINE MOTOR BIKES WORTH OVER $422,500 TO PARTNERS.
MRS. MATAKA SAID EVALUATION AND MONITORING OF HOW THE RESOURCES ARE BEING UTILIZED IS VERY CRITICAL.
SHE STRESSED THAT WHEN LEAD AGENCIES ACCEPT THE MONEY AND MEANS THAT EFFECTIVE MONITORING MECHANISMS ARE PUT IN PLACE ON HOW THE MONEY IS BEING USED TO ATTAIN THE SET TARGETS.
TEN OF THE 13 VEHICLES HAVE BEEN PURCHASED AT A COST OF $287,030 UNDER THE GLOBAL FUND ROUND 8 PHASE ONE GRANT WHICH STARTED ON NOVEMBER ONE, 2009.
THE GLOBAL FUND PHASE EIGHT IS WORTH 10 MILLION DOLLARS AND RUNS FOR FIVE YEARS.
NINE MOTOR BIKES AND THREE MOTOR VEHICLES HAVE BEEN PURCHASE AT A TOTAL COST OF $135,492 UNDER THE JOINT FINANCING ARRANGEMENT.
THE VEHICLES WILL BE USED BY THE ZNAN PROVINCIAL OFFICERS IN LUAPULA, SOUTHERN AND NORTH-WESTERN PROVINCE WHILE THE MOTORBIKES ARE FOR THE PROVINCIAL COMMITTEES IN ALL THE NINE PROVINCES.
THE RECIPIENTS OF THE VEHICLES INCLUDE THANDIZANI COMMUNITY BASED HIV/AIDS ORGANIZATION IN EASTERN PROVINCE, COPPERBELT HEALTH EDUCATION PROJECT, AND DEVELOPMENT AID FROM PEOPLE TO PEOPLE.
OTHERS BENEFITING ORGANISATIONS ARE AIDS ALLIANCE ZAMBIA, SOUTHERN AFRICAN AIDS TRUST, AFRICARE AND SONS OF THUNDER.
