ZAMBIA'S HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION BEMOANS CONDITIONS OF PRISONS

HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION (HRC) HAS REITERATED ITS CALLS ON THE GOVERNMENT TO IMPROVE THE CONDITION OF PRISONS IN THE COUNTRY ESPECIALLY CELLS IN WHICH PRISONERS ARE PUT IN AS THEY WAIT FOR SENTENCING OR SERVING THEIR SENTENCES AS CURRENTLY THEY ARE NOT UP TO THE STANDARD.
HRC CHAIRPERSON PIXIE YANGAILO NOTES THAT EVEN THOUGH THERE HAS BEEN A LITTLE IMPROVEMENT WITH GOVERNMENT CONSTRUCTING MORE PRISONS LIKE THE EXTENSION OF MWEMBESHI PRISONS, A LOT STILL NEED TO BE DONE TO IMPROVE THE CONDITIONS OF THE PRISONS.
SHE HAS POINTED OUT THAT IN CERTAIN PRISONS, INMATES GET TO SHARE A MATTRESS AND CELLS WHICH ARE CONGESTED WITH NO VENTILATION TO PROVIDE THEM WITH ENOUGH AIR TO BREATH AND IN THE END THEY END UP CONTRACTING AIR BORNE DISEASES.
MRS. YANGAILO HAS FURTHER CALLED ON GOVERNMENT TO IMPROVE PRISONS FOR THE JUVENILES WHOM SHE SAID ARE IN CERTAIN INSTANCE LACKING IN THE COUNTRY.
