the media urged not to misuse the power it possesses to influence the electoral process

THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION OF ZAMBIA HAS URGED THE MEDIA IN THE COUNTRY NOT TO MISUSES THE POWER IT POSSESSES TO INFLUENCE THE ELECTORAL PROCESS.
ECZ ACTING DIRECTOR PRISILLA ISAACS SAYS IT NOT EASY TO ERASE ANY DAMAGE CAUSED BY JOURNALISTS` REPORTING CARELESSLY ON ELECTION ISSUES.
MRS ISAAC’S SAYS IT IS CARDINAL FOR REPORTERS TO  BE EXTRA CAREFUL WHEN REPORTING ON ELECTION ISSUES, AS THE OUTCOME OF THE POLLS CAN BE INFLUENCED BY THE MANNER JOURNALISTS COVER A PARTICULAR CANDIDATE.
SHE HAS FURTHER CALLED ON BOTH PRIVATE AND PUBLIC MEDIA TO HAVE BALANCED REPORTS DEVOID OF ANY BIASNESS.
MRS ISAAC’S WAS SPEAKING IN LUSAKA TODAY WHEN SHE OFFICIALLY OPENED A THREE DAY PROVINCIAL MEDIA WORKSHOP FOR LUSAKA AND EASTERN PROVINCES JOURNALISTS.
AND MRS ISAACS SAYS AS WATCHDOG, THE MEDIA CAN PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN BRINGING TO AN END ELECTORAL MALPRACTICES.
MEANWHILE, KITWE TOWN CLERK ALI SIMWINGA HAS CHALLENGED THE ZAMBIAN MEDIA TO USE THEIR WATCHDOG ROLE AND POWER TO STOP MALPRACTICES IN THE ELECTORAL PROCESS.
MR. SIMWINGA SAYS THE WATCHDOG ROLE SHOULD HELP IN PROTECTING PUBLIC INTEREST AND ENCOURAGE PEACEFUL CONDUCT OF ELECTIONS.
THE KITWE TOWN CLERK HAS URGED THE MEDIA TO FOLLOW ACTIVITIES OF ELECTIONS WITH INTEREST AND ADVISE THE PUBLIC ON HOW TO REGISTER AS VOTERS WHENEVER THERE IS VOTER REGISTRATION BEING CONDUCTED. MR. SIMWINGA  HAS OBSERVED THAT IN MOST CASES, JOURNALISTS HAVE CONCENTRATED ON PERSONALITIES OF CANDIDATES OTHER THAN ISSUES.
AND MR. SIMWINGA HAS NOTED THAT FOR CITIZENS TO MAKE WELL-INFORMED DECISIONS IN AN ELECTION, THERE MUST BE A FREE MEDIA.
HE HOWEVER STATED THAT WHILE THE MEDIA MUST BE FREE AND ABLE TO FORM INDEPENDENT AND DIVERSE VIEWS, IT MUST BE RELIABLE, TRUTHFUL AND TRUSTED.
MR. SIMWINGA SAID THIS IN KITWE TODAY IN A SPEECH READ ON HIS BEHALF BY KITWE CITY COUNCIL DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATION PATRICK KAMBITA.
THIS WAS DURING THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE PROVINCIAL MEDIA TRAINING WORKSHOP ORGANISED BY THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION OF ZAMBIA WITH SUPPORT FROM THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (UNDP).
MR. SIMWINGA TOLD THE JOURNALISTS ATTENDING THE WORKSHOP THAT IT IS THROUGH THEM THAT THE PUBLIC FIND OUT ABOUT AN ELECTION AND THE POLITICAL PLAYERS.
HE ADDED  THAT THE MEDIA NEEDS TO REPORT FAIRLY AND ACCURATELY ON THE CAMPAIGNS OF ALL THE POLITICAL PARTIES INVOLVED IN AN ELECTION SO THAT THE ELECTORATE CAN MAKE INFORMED CHOICES.
