SOUTHERN PROVINCE PERMANENT SECRETARY, GLADYS KRISTAFOR HAS CALLED ON THE PUBLIC TO EMBRACE THE AFRICA PEER REVIEW MECHANISM (APRM) PROCESS AS IT IS MEANT TO ASSIST THE COUNTRY AND ITS LEADERSHIP IN DEVELOPING CREDIBLE GOVERNANCE SYSTEMS.
MRS. KRISTAFOR SAID THE APRM PROCESS HAD POTENTIAL TO STRENGTHEN GOVERNANCE SYSTEMS IN FOUR THEMATIC AREAS NAMELY: DEMOCRACY, ECONOMIC, CORPORATE AND POLITICAL GOVERNANCE.
SHE CAUTIONED THE PUBLIC AGAINST PERCEIVING THE APRM AS A ‘BLAME APPORTIONING EXERCISE’ BUT A GENUINE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE ZAMBIA’S GOOD EFFORTS IN REALIZING GOOD GOVERNANCE PRINCIPLES.
MRS. KRISTAFOR SAID THIS IN LIVINGSTONE TODAY WHEN SHE OPENED THE PROVINCIAL VALIDATION WORKSHOP FOR THE NATIONAL PLAN OF ACTION OF THE AFRICA PEER REVIEW COMMISSION.
SHE STATED THAT ONE OF THE IMPORTANT OUTCOMES OF THE APRM PROCESS WAS A SELF-COUNTRY ASSESSMENT REPORT ON GOVERNANCE, WHICH ZAMBIA HAD PREPARED THROUGH A VERY CONSULTATIVE PROCESS.
MRS. KRISTAFOR NOTED THAT THE COUNTRY’S SELF-ASSESSMENT REPORT CONTAINED A LOT OF RECOMMENDATIONS AIMED AT IMPROVING THE GOVERNANCE SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY.
THE PURPOSE OF THE APRM IS TO FOSTER THE ADOPTION OF POLICIES, STANDARDS AND PRACTICES THAT LEAD TO POLITICAL STABILITY, HIGH ECONOMIC GROWTH, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ACCELERATED SUB-REGIONAL GOVERNANCE AND CONTINENTAL ECONOMIC INTEGRATION.
