AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR A NEW COAL MINECOMPLETED WITH 53 HOUSEHOLDS EXPECTED BE DISPLACED.


AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR A NEW COAL MINE SET TO BE OPENED IN SINAZONGWE DISTRICT HAS BEEN COMPLETED WITH 53 HOUSEHOLDS EXPECTED BE DISPLACED.
SINAZONGWE DISTRICT COMMISSIONER OLIVER PELETE HAS SAID DURING THE DISTRICT DEVELOPMENT COORDINATING COMMITTEE MEETING THAT THE NEW OWNERS INDOGO AND JONAH COAL MINE WOULD COMPENSATE THE 53 HOUSEHOLDS THAT WILL BE AFFECTED. 
MR PELETE SAID EACH HOUSEHOLD WOULD BE GIVEN US$ 32,000 FOR BUILDING OF NEW HOUSES IN AN AREA THAT WOULD BE IDENTIFIED.
IN AUGUST INDONGO AND JONAH COAL MINE COUNSULTANT LEWIS TUMBAMA SAID THAT 50 PERCENT OF THE MINE SHARES WOULD BE OWNED BY ZAMBIANS WHILE THE OTHER 50 PERCENT IS FOR FOREIGN INVESTORS.
HE DISCLOSED THAT US$ 10 MILLION WOULD BE THE INITIAL CAPITAL THAT WOULD BE PUMPED IN THE MINING PROJECT.
MR. TUMBAMA NOTED THAT THE MINE WHICH WILL BE AN OPEN PIT, WILL HAVE A WASHING PLANT, POLLUTION CONTROL FACILITY AND A RESIDENTIAL AREA FOR HIGH COST AND LOW COST HOUSES AMONG OTHER FACILITIES.
THE 53 HOUSEHOLDS THAT WOULD BE DISPLACED ARE FROM SIABWACHA, SIAPUKWE, MALYANGO, MUDODODI, AND SIAVWELA VILLAGES.
