Government has been urged to ensure that it provides security for its citizens by addressing challenges faced in the country’s social security schemes.
Zambia union of financial institutions and allied workers President Joyce Nonde said the policy surrounding the social security scheme must ensure that many Zambians are captured in the pension scheme especially those in the informal sector.
Speaking during radio phoenix’ s “let the people talk”, mrs nonde added that government has the duty to give security to its citizens and further ensuring that the rights of pensioners are adequately addressed.
Mrs nonde expressed concern at the pace at which the local authorities pay benefits to their retired employees and has called on ministry of labour to empower inspectors in an effort to speed up this process.
National pension scheme authority director for contributions and benefits Mr.Yollard kachinda said the most which pension schemes get has to be invested so that when time comes for employees to get their benefits there are no problems.
Mr kachinda said citizens making contributions to napsa have the right to know how their money is been utilized or the investments been made.
And local authorities’ superannuation fund manager for contribution and benefits mr tresford chiyavula said lasf has had problems of non payments, by now the employees will be getting their benefits within two years and hopes to further reduce this to three months.
And contributing to the programme most of the caller including Mr. Elijah ngwala complained that the country’s social security schemes has failed to pay retirees their benefits and as a result most of them have since died.
