A CONSORTIUM OF THREE CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS THAT MONITORED THE RECENT CHILANGA AND MPULUNGU BY ELECTIONS HAS URGED THE HOUSE OF CHIEFS TO HELP STOP THE GROWING CULTURE OF TRADITIONAL LEADERS SIDING WITH THE RULING MMD DURING POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS.

THE ANTI-VOTER APATHY PROJECT (AVAP) CARITAS ZAMBIA AND SOUTHERN AFRICAN CENTER FOR CONSTRUCTIVE RESOLUTION OF DISPUTES (SACCORD) SAY THE HOUSE OF CHIEFS MUST ADDRESS THIS MATTER AS IT ERODES THE CULTURAL VALUES OF SOCIETY.
SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE THREE ORGANISATIONS, AVAP PROGRAMMES OFFICER RICHWELL MULWANI CHARGED THAT THE CONTINUED ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT OF CHIEFS IN ELECTION CAMPAIGNS HAS CREATED DIVISIONS AMONG THE SUBJECTS.
MR. MULWANI HAS DEMANDED THAT TRADITIONAL LEADERS SHOULD ABIDE BY THE REPUBLICAN CONSTITUTION WHICH BARS THEM FROM TAKING SIDES IN THE POLITICAL ARENA.
HE SAID THIS DURING A JOINT STATEMENT ON THE MPULUNGU AND CHILANGA BY ELECTIONS ISSUED AT THE SACCORD HEAD OFFICE IN LUSAKA TODAY.

AND MR. MULWANI HAS DISCLOSED THAT ELECTORAL CORRUPTION HAS BECOME RIFE DURING CAMPAIGNS AS ELECTORATES ARE EVER EXPECTANT OF RECEIVING BRIBES FROM POLITICAL PARTIES.
MR. MULWANI SAYS THIS VICE PERPETRATED BY POLITICIANS IS UNDERMINING THE TENTS OF DEMOCRACY.
