Kazungula district in southern province has recorded massive reduction in malaria cases and current stands at 13.6 per thousand.
This came to light when a team of journalists paid a courtesy call on the district health on Thursday.
The district has in the past five years reduced that cases of malaria to where it stands now due to various interventions which include indoor residual spraying, distribution of mosquitoes nets, early diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
Kazungula district nursing officer likando alisheke explained that the number of malaria cases stood at 365 per thousand in 2005 when they started implementating various interventions then dropped to 9 in 2008, 10.4 in 2009 and now stands at 13.4 per thousand.
But the district health management was hast to state that not one single intervention can promise 100 percent eradication of malaria, stating that a combination of them produced better results.
And kazungula health district senior environmental manager chilube mungole bemoaned the poor inflow of funds statin that last release of funds hampered early indoor spraying, and other programmes.
Mrs mungole also pointed out that with the specific targets for been women and children, this has proved to be a challenge as many people where left out when it came to distribution of the nets.
Meanwhile, district planner shaba Tolbert indicated that the involvement of the community in the eradication of malaria has played a critical role in the cases of malaria coming down.
Mr shaba explained that the district trains malaria agents from the communities where they serve and equip them with various skills such as management, diagnosis and treatment of malaria.
He said this intervention has greatly helped in eradicating malaria.
kazungula district covers approximately 15, 500 square kilometers and is one of the districts making huge strides in the reduction of malaria cases.
